# Disclaimers

By using this modpack, you agree to the following:

### Server rules and policies

* The modpack has been set up to be compatible with the rules of most public third-party servers, but it is your responsibility to verify whether you are allowed to use it or not. [The mod list may help.](https://download.fo/mods)
* The modpack supports using controllers with analog input, whose usage may trigger anticheats on some servers due to unexpectedly smooth movement. If the playing server rules disallow analog input, the user is expected to manually add the server to the mod whitelist, or disable analog input entirely.
  * The user is reminded of said fact upon joining any new server with a controller and analog input enabled.

### Changed default options

* The modpack hides the [third-party server disclaimer](https://minecraft.wiki/w/File:Multiplayer_disclaimer.png), therefore by using the multiplayer function, you implicitly agree to the following:

  > Caution: Online play is offered by third-party servers that are not owned, operated, or supervised by Mojang Studios or Microsoft. During online play, you may be exposed to unmoderated chat messages or other types of user-generated content that may not be suitable for everyone.
* The modpack hides a hotkey disclaimer for [the "social interactions" screen](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Social_interactions#Usage). Said screen can be opened by pressing the key `P` in-game or the `Player Reporting` button in the pause menu.
* Other [changed default options can be found here.](/changed-options)

### Privacy and security

* The modpack features [e4mc](https://modrinth.com/mod/e4mc), which gives users the ability to let their friends connect to their world through the internet, without the use of additional software or mods on the friend side.
  * The feature is (only!) activated by the usual means of opening a world to LAN, so the world can be connected both through LAN and from Internet.
  * A proxy server in one of the four locations in the world is used to generate a randomized "IP" (technically, a subdomain) where other players can connect to. The host's own IP address is never shared, and the generated "IP" varies every time.
  * LAN-sharing and Internet-sharing are automatically disabled once the host disconnects the world. The host can also close the Internet sharing manually for the session by clicking on the link in chat that appeared during creation.
  * Both LAN and Internet variants use the same world settings (gamemode, cheats enabled, etc.), including the player limit of host + up to 7 players.
* The modpack disables Mojang's telemetry, as the data collection is not anonymous and because modified game statistics would skew collected data. [Read more](/changed-options#telemetry)
* The modpack disables certain mod network services (where present), including mod update checkers and cosmetic donor features, to avoid confusion and privacy concerns. These can be re-enabled by users [in the respective configs.](/changed-options#configuring-mods)
* An indicator icon is added to inform players of the chat signing status in the server (whether the server supports [Mojang's chat safety features](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/7317376541197-Minecraft-Java-Edition-Player-Reporting-FAQ)). On servers where chat signing is optional, the modpack opts out of it for the playing user to adhere to the server's intent. [Read more](/chat-reporting-faq#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me).

### License and legal

* By installing this modpack you agree that the modpack author, the mod developers and Mojang provide no warranties for using this modpack, every action you do with it is your own.

  * Website at <https://download.fo>

* Fabulously Optimized does not host any capes or other cosmetics, nor does it encourage users to buy them from any provider. Instead, the modpack encourages users to [prefer free cosmetics](/free-cape), while also giving them options to use any paid cosmetics they've previously obtained from certain providers.
* Yes, you can fork/remix this pack [according to the license](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/LICENSE.md). You cannot, however, use the "Fabulously Optimized" name or logo to *represent* your fork (but you can mention that you forked it).

> **\[1]**: Updates to the modpack within the same Minecraft version are automatic. The modpack cannot be updated automatically across Minecraft versions.
>
> **\[2]**: These launchers support the modpack and its mods by increasing their download count, but not with monetary benefits.

### Why try a new launcher?

The default Minecraft launcher is very basic, and it lacks many features that improve usability with mods. For example, a third-party launcher can easily download and update the modpack, add and remove mods with a few simple clicks. Many can even manage resource packs, datapacks and shaders!

All launchers in the "supported" list are safe to use, have been thoroughly tested and are fully supported by Fabulously Optimized.

<summary>Got asked to download a mod manually?</summary>

If you get asked to download a specific jar, it means we are not allowed to bundle it and you must add it manually:

1. Copy and paste the given address to your browser
2. Click `Cancel Launch`
3. Click `Download` on the mod
4. On MultiMC, click on the instance, then click `View Mods`
5. Drag the downloaded mod into the mod list
6. Click `Launch`

</details>

<details>

<summary>How does this work?</summary>

It is a normal MultiMC modpack that simply launches [packwiz](https://github.com/comp500/packwiz), a mod handling tool on every start.

Every time you launch it, it asks the server whether the modpack has any updates. This means you do need internet access or you'll get an error (though you can skip the error). If there are any, they will be downloaded and launched, otherwise the current game will launch.

It does *not* auto-update any individual mods outside of what is set in the modpack.

# Unsupported methods

These launchers and installation methods are not supported by the modpack. This page lists reasons and alternatives for some of them.

## GDLauncher

Due to technical limits and bugs, GDLauncher Legacy is no longer supported. GDLauncher Carbon may be supported in the future.

## ATLauncher

*Not to be confused with* [*TLauncher*](#tlauncher)*.*

ATLauncher is currently not supported simply because the interface is confusing and complex. There have been discussions with its developer to improve this and it may be considered in the future.

## Angel Aura Amethyst

Angel Aura Amethyst and its predecessor Pojav Launcher are not supported because they allow piracy and do not support Sodium, among some other issues.

## PolyMC

{% hint style="danger" %}
PolyMC is a fork of MultiMC that [got compromised in 2022](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/496). Users are advised to use its safe continuation, [Prism Launcher](/install-instructions/prism-launcher).
{% endhint %}

## TLauncher

*Not to be confused with* [*ATLauncher*](#atlauncher)*.*

{% hint style="danger" %}
[TLauncher is malware](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBTH9n6lz9o), so users who have it are advised to [reset their computer](https://www.howtogeek.com/202590/stop-trying-to-clean-your-infected-computer-just-nuke-it-and-reinstall-windows/) and change their passwords.
{% endhint %}

## Cracked launchers

Any launchers that let you run the game without having purchased it first are not supported.

{% hint style="success" %}
There is a legitimate way to obtain Minecraft for cheaper: [get a giftcode from a trusted reseller](https://download.fo/minecraft).
{% endhint %}

## Other launchers

Technically it is possible to install the modpack in any Minecraft launcher, however no support is provided by the modpack.

## Other mod loaders

The modpack only supports Fabric Loader. Other mod loaders are not planned.

## Other modpacks

It is theoretically possible to combine modpacks, but:

* the mods may have conflicts
* neither this or the other modpack will be able to support you

Instead, we recommend you to use Fabulously Optimized with [other mods added by you](/adding-more-mods).

## Game clients

Fabulously Optimized is not compatible with any "game clients", including "hacked clients" and "PvP clients". [It is also itself not one.](/principles#why-is-fabulously-optimized-not-a-client)

Instead, it is suggested to use this modpack and [add individual features as mods](/adding-more-mods) that you might be missing from said clients.

## Bedrock Edition

Fabulously Optimized is not compatible with Bedrock Edition [or mobile devices in general](#angel-aura-amethyst).

You may be interested in the [VDX resource pack](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft-bedrock/addons/vdx-legacy-desktop-ui) just to achieve a Java-like look, however.

# How to update

{% hint style="warning" %}
As with any update, *things may break*. Probably not due to the modpack itself, but maybe your launcher, your added mods or your hard drive. [Backups are recommended.](/backup-and-uninstall)

Do not update the modpack's mods manually, unless it is a legacy version and you know what you're doing.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
If you follow these instructions, your added mods and most modpack mods' settings will persist. If you want, you can [reset your settings](/update-instructions/reset-options) to get the latest modpack configurations.

Always update the modpack first and then your own mods (if any).

# Reset options

Because the pack is using Config Manager or YOSBR, your vanilla options and most of the mod ones will not change when you upgrade. This is done so that you can upgrade without having to reconfigure your options all the time.

However, at some point you may still want to do that in order to get the latest changes.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Modern versions" %}

1. Launch the game
2. Go to `Mods` -> `Config Manager` -> `🎛️`
3. If you want to *apply latest changes* but keep configs for added mods, select `Update modpack's configs`.
   * If you want to *delete all configs* and start fresh, select `Reset modpack's configs`.
4. Close the game and start it again. See if it works.
   * If you got an error (especially on alpha or beta versions), start the game again to ensure configurations are properly applied.
     {% endtab %}

{% tab title="FO 10.3.1 and older" %}

1. Open the modpack folder:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="CurseForge App" %}
Right click on the modpack tile → `Open Folder`

Right click on the instance → `Minecraft Folder`
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Minecraft Launcher" %}
Click `Installations` → hover on the instance → click `📁`
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

2. Delete the `config` folder
   * If you prefer, also delete `options.txt` which stores vanilla options
3. Download [your version of the modpack again from Modrinth](https://modrinth.com/modpack/fabulously-optimized/versions)
4. Rename the file to `pack.zip`
5. Open the file you renamed, go to `overrides`
6. Copy/extract the folder `configs` out to the modpack folder you previously opened
   * You may delete the `pack.zip` after you're done
7. Launch the game. Modpack's defaults are now applied!
   {% endtab %}

The tool downloads missing mods back on launch, therefore you need to make a custom script. Consider [switching to Prism Launcher instead](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/blob/main/disabling-mods/install-instructions/prism-launcher.md), which allows disabling mods with just a click.
{% endhint %}

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}
{% hint style="warning" %}
These instructions are here as-is to be used at your own risk, no support is provided.
{% endhint %}

1. Download the mod disabling scripts:
   1. Open MultiMC, right click your instance and click "Instance Folder"
   2. Inside the folder, shift-right click and select Open in Terminal (or equivalent PowerShell prompt)
   3. Within the terminal, run the following commands to download the files.

```
(Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/main/Packwiz/pre-launch.ps1" -OutFile "pre-launch.ps1")
(Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/main/Packwiz/post-exit.ps1" -OutFile "post-exit.ps1")
```

If you wish to install them somewhere else, run `cd path\to\folder` (where `path\to\folder` is the path to your folder's location) before running the command above.

2. Select the mods to disable.
   1. Copy the name of the mod(s) you want to disable.
   2. Open `pre-launch.ps1` with any text editor
   3. On line 4, double click `mod1` and paste the name of the mod you previously copied. You can do this on line 5 too! If you want to disable more mods, copy all of line 5, press the `Enter` key at the end of line 5 and hit paste. (Make sure to change the name to match the new mod, though!)
      * Mod names may change with modpack updates so you'll need to update them here again.
3. Setup the scripts to run on your MultiMC (auto-update) instance
   1. Open MultiMC
   2. Click on your instance "Edit Instance"
   3. Go to "Settings" and then to "Custom Commands"
   4. Remove the pre-launch command and replace it with `powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ..\pre-launch.ps1`
      * If you've installed it elsewhere, use `path\to\folder\pre-launch.ps1` (where `path\to\folder` is the path to the folder)
   5. Do the same thing for the post-exit command but with `powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ..\post-exit.ps1` this time.
      * Or `path\to\folder\post-exit.ps1` (where `path\to\folder` is the path to the folder)
4. That's it! Now, the mods you disabled will not run with the instance nor appear inside Mod Menu!

1. Open a terminal and run the command below:
   * Debian-Ubuntu Linux: `sudo apt-get install jq`
   * Fedora Linux: `sudo dnf install jq`
   * openSUSE Linux: `sudo zypper install jq`
   * Arch Linux: `sudo pacman -S jq --needed`
   * Other distros/macOS: [follow this tutorial](https://stedolan.github.io/jq/download/)

This will install a program called [jq](https://stedolan.github.io/jq/), needed for automatically adapting this script to any Minecraft version you use.

2. Download the mod disabling scripts:
   1. Open MultiMC, right click your instance and click "Instance Folder"
   2. Inside the folder right click and select "Open Terminal here"
      * On macOS, [follow this tutorial](https://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0001060) to get that option
   3. Within the terminal, run the following command - this will install the files and make them executable:

```shell
curl -Os https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/main/Packwiz/pre-launch.sh | curl -Os https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/main/Packwiz/post-exit.sh && chmod +x pre-launch.sh post-exit.sh
```

If you want to install them somewhere else, run `cd /path/to/folder` (where `/path/to/folder` is the path to your folder's location) before running the command above.

3. Select the mods to disable
   1. Copy the name of the mod(s) you want to disable
   2. Open `pre-launch.sh` with any text editor
   3. Find the line saying "Select the mods you wish to disable:" and below it `mod0=`, `mod1=`, `mod2=`,`mod3=`, `mod4=` and `mod5=`. After `=` place the name of the mods you previously copied, one by one.
      * No matter how many mods you disable, **never** remove `mod0=` and `$mod0.jar`.
      * Mod names may change with modpack updates so you'll need to update them here again.
4. Setup the scripts to run on your MultiMC (auto-update) instance
   1. Open MultiMC
   2. Click on your instance "Edit Instance"
   3. Go to "Settings" and then to "Custom Commands"
   4. Remove the pre-launch command and replace it with `../pre-launch.sh`
      * If you've installed it elsewhere, use `/path/to/folder/pre-launch.sh` (where `/path/to/folder` is the path to the folder)
   5. Do the same thing for the post-exit command but with `../post-exit.sh` this time.
      * Or `path/to/folder/post-exit.sh` (where `/path/to/folder` is the path to the folder)
5. That's it! Now, the mods you disabled will not run with the instance nor appear inside Mod Menu!

**What if I want to disable more or less than 6 mods?**

* Removing: Just remove the extra rows from the start and end of `pre-launch.sh`, eg. from lines 10 & 11 `mod4=`, `mod5=` and `$mod4.jar\`, `$mod5.jar\` from lines 35 & 36, if you want to have 4 mods disabled.
* Adding: Press `Enter` in the end of line 11 and type `mod6=` for example. Then, in the end of line 36, press again `Enter` and type `$mod6.jar\`. Repeat the same for more mods by just changing the number (`mod6=` to `mod7=` and `$mod6.jar\` to `$mod7.jar\` etc.).
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

# Minecraft Launcher

1. Open Minecraft Launcher, click on `Installations`
2. Hover on the Fabric installation, click 📂
3. Click `mods`
4. Rename the specific mod from "modname.jar" to "modname.jar.disabled"
   * Rename ".jar.disabled" back to ".jar" to use the mod again.

{% hint style="info" %}

# How to backup and uninstall

Sometimes you might want to reinstall the modpack or remove old instances of it. Here's how to do it.

## Backup

Before uninstalling the modpack, it is highly recommended to back up the contents you've made in it.

1. Open the `minecraft` folder:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="CurseForge App" %}
Right click on the modpack tile → `Open Folder`
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Modrinth App" %}
Right click on the modpack tile → `📂 Open folder`
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Prism Launcher" %}
Right click on the instance → `Folder` → `.minecraft`
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="MultiMC" %}
Right click on the instance → `Minecraft Folder`
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Minecraft Launcher" %}
Click `Installations` → hover on the instance → click `📁`
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

2. Find the folders you want to back up.
   * `saves` - your local worlds
   * `resourcepacks` - if you added any (it is not needed to copy [the modpack defaults](/changed-options#resource-packs))
   * `shaders` - if you use any
   * `screenshots` - screenshots you've taken with F2 or F9
   * `servers.dat` - your multiplayer servers
   * `config` - your mod options
   * `options.txt` - if you want to keep your vanilla option and all hotkey changes
3. Copy the chosen folders or their contents to your preferred location, such as Desktop or Documents.
4. When you reinstall the modpack, copy the folders/contents back to the aforementioned location.

¹ Not identical to OptiFine as people did not prefer the look. If you want it to be identical:

1. [Disable MoreCulling](/disabling-mods)
2. [Install](/adding-more-mods) the original [Cull Leaves](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/cull-leaves)
3. Enable Cull Leaves' bundled resource pack
4. Disable "Use Block Face Culling" in `Options` → `Video Settings...` → `Performance`.

² The defaults do not match OptiFine, because people preferred a smoother zoom. To make it identical to OptiFine:

1. Click `Mods` button, search for `Zoomify`, click it and on the top left hit the `Configure` icon.
2. Head over to Misc tab, set the preset to `OptiFine`

³ Sodium, which is the mod providing a more performant rendering engine also has a redesigned video settings screen. This is persisted in the modpack, as users consider it to be more organized and better-looking than the vanilla one. Additionally, it adds new and hides some vanilla options that reflect the changed engine more accordingly.

Users who prefer the old look can do one of the following:

* Enter the video settings and press <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>P</kbd>. This will persist until toggled again or exited the screen.
* Add [Better Sodium Video Settings](https://modrinth.com/mod/better-sodium-video-settings-button) - shows vanilla video settings by default, with a button to show Sodium ones
* Add [Enchanted's Sodium Options](https://modrinth.com/mod/enchanteds-sodium-options) - redesigns Sodium video settings to match vanilla look more closely
* Add [Xander's Sodium Options](https://modrinth.com/mod/xanders-sodium-options) or [its updated fork](https://modrinth.com/mod/xso) - redesigns Sodium video settings to have tabs on top and use vanilla UI elements throughout

# Changed options

Fabulously Optimized changes some default options of Minecraft and the included mods to improve your gameplay.

Because the pack is using Config Manager, the options will only change if you do not have `options.txt` or mod-specific files in `config` folder already, e.g. by using a clean profile. That also means you can freely update the pack without losing your settings!

Changed mod settings [can be found here](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/tree/main/Packwiz/1.21.11/config).

## Resource packs

Fabulously Optimized enables relevant mod-provided resource packs and bundles some resource packs for better experience.

* [Mod Menu Helper](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/tree/main/Resource%20Packs/Mod%20Menu%20Helper) (FO-exclusive) - explains what each mod does in a consistent and clear way on Mod Menu
* [Chat Reporting Helper](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/chat-reporting-helper) - explains [chat reporting](/chat-reporting-faq) in a clear way by simplifying vanilla and No Chat Reports tooltips and No Chat Reports icons
* [Translations for Sodium](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/translations-for-sodium) - adds unofficial translations for Sodium (video settings)

The resource packs use minimal resources, [can be translated to your language](/language-support) and they will work with other resource packs.

### Video settings

Most "quality & performance" video settings on the modpack are based on the vanilla preset "fast" for improved performance. User can change the preset by going to video settings, pressing <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>P</kbd> and adjusting the slider.

### Debug screen

Vanilla <kbd>F3</kbd> debug screen can display various pieces of information and is configured with <kbd>F3</kbd>+<kbd>F6</kbd>. As it is a debugging feature and the old look cannot be directly replicated anyway, FO has chosen to keep it as default for now, except for the following:

## Fixed bugs

Fabulously Optimized includes some mods that fix vanilla bugs. [Similar to the mod inclusion policy](/principles), they must be meaningful to 70%+ users to get enabled (e.g. FPS drops, crashes, platform-specific annoyances...).

If you'd like to enable more bugfixes for your game, see [the fixed bug list for Debugify](https://github.com/isXander/Debugify/blob/1.21.11/PATCHED.md#unpatched-in-vanilla).

### Telemetry

**Telemetry Data Collection**, previously known as **Snooper**, refers to Minecraft's and potentially mods', launchers' methods of collecting analytics about the user, usually in a limited form to preserve privacy. [Minecraft's telemetry options are detailed here.](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Snooper)

While telemetry is not always bad, as it may help developers better support their content for users' devices (e.g. to see where performance can be improved) it can be unwanted and unexpected for privacy concerns.

As of 1.20.2, Minecraft does not have an option to fully disable telemetry, so in this modpack such option is added by [Debugify](https://curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/debugify). The reason for disabling vanilla telemetry is that

1. it collects too much data even in minimal configuration (e.g. user's Xbox ID)
2. it skews Mojang's data due to being modded - Mojang may see that users using the modpack have good performance, but it does not actually reflect the original game

[The modpack's stance](/principles) is to disable all forms of telemetry by default, letting users to choose to opt-in to it manually when wanted. The modpack cannot disable any telemetry collected by game launcher or operating system.

### Requesting a bugfix

Want to get a bug fixed in Fabulously Optimized? Here's what you'll need to do:

1. Find the actual bug [in Mojang's bug tracker](https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC)
2. Request it or look at its status on [Debugify's bug tracker](https://github.com/isXander/Debugify/issues)
3. Once implemented in Debugify and confirmed to be in the "Client" tab, [request an option change in FO](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/new?assignees=\&labels=option\&template=setting-request.yml)
4. Describe the bug, mention the mod that fixes it and why it is important to 70-80% of users
5. If accepted, expect the fix to be enabled in the next version of FO :)

## Configuring mods

The modpack is already configured for the best performance and simplest experience for most users.

If you want to configure something, you'll most likely find it on `Options...` → `Video Settings...`. If you have a powerful computer or monitor, you may want to disable VSync there.

For other things like dynamic lights, shaders and zoom:

1. Click `Mods`
2. Read the descriptions of the mods to see what they do
3. If `🛠️` or `✏️` is blue, you can configure the mod by clicking the config button ![config](https://i.ibb.co/j35cBtn/image.png)
   * If you don't see the `🛠️` or `✏️` emoji, you don't have the Mod Menu Helper resource pack enabled for some reason. Click `Done` → `Options...` → `Resource Packs...` → `⏵` on "Mod Menu Helper.zip" → `Done` → go to point 1 of this tutorial

If you need to disable a mod, [see this wiki page](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/blob/main/disabling-mods.md).

If you have more questions about the mods, [chat with us on Discord!](https://fabulously-optimized.github.io/discord)

### Official capes

Mojang has begun to release more [official, cross-platform capes](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Cape#Cross-platform_capes) for completing various actions during game events. These events are announced on [the modpack's Discord server](https://download.fo/discord/) as they happen. Ensure you have the **Other news** role to get notified!

### "Update your mod"

Unfortunately [MinecraftCapes updated their servers](https://github.com/CaelTheColher/Capes/issues/118), which causes this message to appear on users' capes in older versions of the modpack. Here are your options, pick *one*:

* [Update Fabulously Optimized to latest version](/update-instructions) - the easiest and best solution.
* [Remove Capes](/disabling-mods) and [install](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/blob/main/adding-more-mods/README.md) [MinecraftCapes](https://modrinth.com/mod/minecraftcapes) instead - fixes the message, but you'll lose out on other providers like OptiFine capes.
* Disable MinecraftCapes support - gets rid of the message, but also this provider's capes in general (you can no longer use the free cape instructions above).
  * Go to `Options...` → `Skin Customization...` → ![Capes icon](https://github.com/CaelTheColher/Capes/blob/architectury/common/src/main/resources/assets/capes/textures/gui/sprites/icon/cape_options.png?raw=true) → `Toggle` → `MinecraftCapes: OFF` → `Done` → `Done` → `Done`.
* [Remove Capes](/disabling-mods) and [install](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/blob/main/adding-more-mods/README.md) [Cosmetica](https://modrinth.com/mod/cosmetica) - fixes the message and keeps other providers, but the experience can highly vary from FO defaults, so it is recommended to configure the mod to suit your needs.
  * Go to `Mods` → search "Cosmetica" → press ![config](https://i.ibb.co/j35cBtn/image.png) → configure by your preferences.

### Disclaimer

Fabulously Optimized does not host any capes or other cosmetics, nor does it encourage users to buy them from any provider. Instead, the modpack encourages users to prefer free cosmetics, while also giving them options to use any paid cosmetics they've previously obtained from certain providers.

* [Depth Shaders resource pack](https://github.com/onnowhere/depth_shaders/releases)
* [More shaders can be found on Modrinth](https://modrinth.com/shaders?g=categories%3A%27vanilla%27)

#### Installation

1. Go to `Options` -> `Video Settings` -> `Quality` -> `Graphics: Fabulous!`
2. Download any [Fabulous shader pack](https://modrinth.com/shaders?g=categories%3A%27vanilla%27)
3. Move the shader pack to `resourcepacks` folder or drag it into the resourcepacks screen
4. Apply the resource pack in resource packs screen

### Core shaders

"Core shaders" are a kind of vanilla shaders utilized by resource packs to adjust the vanilla HUD and add special effects to specific blocks. These usually do *not* change landscapes overall and *may or may not work in FO.*

Examples of working core shaders of [Vanilla Tweaks](https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/resource-packs/):

* Translucent Spyglass Overlay
* No Spyglass Overlay

Examples of **not** working core shaders of [Vanilla Tweaks](https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/resource-packs/):

* ~~Mob Spawn Indicator~~
* ~~Wavy Leaves~~
* ~~Wavy Plants~~
* ~~Wavy Water~~

Luckily those features can be replicated with [OptiFine shaders](#optifine-shaders) or [other mods](/adding-more-mods), so you're not missing out.

**Resource pack developers**: you may try to make your pack work in Sodium [with this mod](https://modrinth.com/mod/sodium-core-shader-support) or [this manifest](https://github.com/CaffeineMC/sodium-fabric/pull/2206).

#### Installation

1. [Download a core shader-using resource pack from Modrinth](https://modrinth.com/resourcepacks?f=categories%3A%27core-shaders%27)
2. Move the resource pack to `resourcepacks` folder or drag it into the resourcepacks screen
3. Apply the resource pack in resource packs screen
4. See if it works.
   * If yes, enjoy!
   * If not, it is recommended to use OptiFine shaders or other mods for the same purpose.
     * You may, alternatively, disable Sodium and related mods if you really want them to work, but that will harm your performance too.

### Canvas shaders

[Canvas Renderer](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/canvas-renderer) is a mod that provides a new type of shaders that may be better optimized for powerful computers.

Canvas shaders are **not supported by default on FO**. By replacing some mods, you can still make them work, however.

# Resource pack troubleshooting

Fabulously Optimized supports [various OptiFine features](/give-up-optifine), including resource pack extras. However, the implementation differs from mod to mod and some resource packs are accepted in OptiFine even if they are broken, so this page should help you fix some of those issues.

### Older versions

Is the resource pack actually built for the version you're running? If not, check for the latest version or use a converter tool like [this one](https://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/minecraft-1-12-1-13-1-14-1-15-resource-pack-converter/) or [the official one](https://github.com/Mojang/slicer).

### Broken paths

If you see this message while activating a resource pack:

![Contains broken paths](https://i.ibb.co/26cMtqr/Screenshot-20211116-191457.png)

This means the resource pack maker is **using spaces or other non-standard characters** in the file or folder names.

If this is the case, the modpack will warn you and allow overriding it, but note that various glitches may occur (miscolored or invisible blocks, lighting issues, broken textures...).

To fix that, please tell the resource pack maker to only use the following characters in file/folder names: `a-z0-9._-`.

See also: [Minecraft Wiki article about this](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Resource_location#Legal_characters)

### Fullbright

If you want to have game brightness at 100% where not usually expected, see your options below.

#### Works

* [Night Vision potion](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Night_Vision)
* Holding up a torch
* [Dedicated mods](https://modrinth.com/mods?q=fullbright\&e=client\&g=categories:fabric) that add fullbright
* [Shaders (Iris or OptiFine)](https://modrinth.com/discover/shaders?q=fullbright) for fullbright

#### Does not work

* Resource packs that add fullbright [("core shaders")](#core-shadersincompatible-with-sodium)
* Editing options.txt directly (vanilla game restriction)

### Disabling fog

If you'd like to disable fog, see your options below.

#### Works

* Fog setting in video settings (provided by the modpack)
* [Dedicated mods](https://modrinth.com/discover/mods?q=fog\&g=categories:fabric\&e=client) that add fog toggles
* [Shaders (Iris or OptiFine)](https://modrinth.com/discover/shaders?q=fog) for disabling fog

#### Does not work

* Resource packs that disable fog [("core shaders")](#core-shadersincompatible-with-sodium)

### Invisible blocks

This may occur when the pack is using broken paths and is trying to change the models of some blocks, like chests.

#### Enhanced Block Entities

Enhanced Block Entities is the mod that makes various blocks faster on most versions of FO. Some optimizations may not be supported by your resource packs, so here's how to configure it:

1. Click `Mods`
2. Search for "Enhanced Block Entities", click the config button ![config](https://i.ibb.co/j35cBtn/image.png)
3. Enable "Force Resource Pack Compatibility"
   * If that doesn't help or the option is not visible, disable any blocks that seem broken to you. Usually disabling `Enhanced Chests` is enough.
4. Click `Done`

#### Better Beds

Some versions of FO include Better Beds instead.

1. Close the game
2. Remove or disable the Better Beds mod from your launcher.
3. Start the game and see if it is fixed.

#### FastChest (FO 1.12.3 and older)

1. Click `Mods`
2. Search for "FastChest", click the config button ![](https://i.ibb.co/j35cBtn/image.png)
3. Disable the mod, click `Done`.

### Core shaders/incompatible with Sodium

![Resource packs may be incompatible with Sodium](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/assets/8611110/0049c401-2922-4d03-976b-44bbf4fcc6a9) ![Resource packs are incompatible with Sodium](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/assets/8611110/3116448a-53fe-4af0-9520-99c061694ba0)

Does the resource pack change the UI beyond usual means (e.g. rearrange HUD elements)? Does the resource pack change lighting or fog?

That means it may depend on [core shaders](/getting-shaders#core-shaders), which are not fully supported on the modpack. When possible, always use dedicated mods instead.

### Custom colors

Please ensure you're using FO 5.9.0 or newer; or FO 4.5.7 or older.

### Custom entity models

*Or "mobs with a custom shape".*

[Fresh Animations](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/fresh-animations)' latest version is fully supported.

If the entities are missing parts of their body, try this:

1. Click `Mods`
2. Search for "Entity Model Features", click the config button (top right, above `Issues`)
3. Set "Substitute missing model parts" to `Yes`
4. Click `Save changes` and `Done`

Issues and workarounds are tracked [on the mod's Discord](https://discord.com/invite/rURmwrzUcz) or [GitHub](https://github.com/Traben-0/Entity_Model_Features/issues).

<details>

<summary>Legacy versions - 4.6.0 and earlier</summary>

Partly supported. [Resource packs that should work are discussed here (cem#9)](https://github.com/dorianpb/cem/issues/9)

For Fresh Animations, [try this version](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/fresh-animations/files/3705824) with the instructions below [(discuss any issues here)](https://github.com/dorianpb/cem/issues/11).

If your resource pack's entities are supported but are still not displayed correctly, you can try this:

1. Click `Mods`
2. Search for "Custom Entity Models", click the config button (top right, above `Issues`)
3. Set "Use model creation fix?" to `No`
4. Click `Save & Quit` and `Done`
5. In your world, hold down `F3` (and `Fn` on laptops), press `T`
6. You'll see a short loading screen. After that, check if the models are displayed correctly.
7. If they still are not, set that setting back to `Yes` and disable your resource pack, wait for CEM to implement them.
   * Or if you want to continue using your resource pack without the models, disable the optifine setting in CEM to essentially disable the mod.

# Version support

## Installer

### Why does the installer show fewer versions than other platforms?

As the installer is intended for users with the least Minecraft knowledge, the versions are also limited to the stable versions.

Due to high interest, it will still always include the latest Minecraft version, even if the equivalent modpack version is still in alpha or beta. This can be selected by clicking on the version list and selecting the topmost item.

If you're missing the latest version of the modpack on the installer, [update the installer.](/install-instructions/minecraft-launcher)

## Versions

### How often does Fabulously Optimized receive updates?

The goal is to push out a new version once per week or two weeks. This is not a guarantee and can change depending on the amount of mod updates, Mojang's schedules, real-life duties and others.

### How do the modpack version numbers work?

* **X**.Y.Z stands for "major versions"
  * 1.x.x-6.x.x directly map to Minecraft's A.**B**.C [full releases](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_version_history#Full_release) (1.16.x was 1, 1.17.x was 2, etc)
  * 8.x.x and onwards the versions are mapped to [game drops](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Game_drop), beginning with The Garden Awakens
* X.**Y**.Z stands for minor versions which may map to Minecraft's A.B.**C** or just refer to bigger changes like added mods
* X.Y.**Z** stands for patch versions - no breaking changes, no mod additions/removals

Here is how you should think about the version types in relation to Minecraft's:

| Minecraft term | Modpack equivalent term |
| ----------------- | ----------------------- |
| snapshot          | alpha                   |
| pre-release       | beta                    |
| release candidate | beta\*                  |
| release           | stable                  |

\* Fabulously Optimized does not explicitly mark release candidates as such, because its releases often depend on external factors (the included 3rd party mods).

### What versions are supported?

The latest stable version and if available, also latest beta and/or alpha versions. Older versions are listed for your convenience, but may not receive any more updates.

### Are snapshots or April Fools releases supported?

No. Only stable versions of Minecraft are supported as they are available on all platforms/launchers and support the most mods.

### What do symbols mean in a version's title?

* ⚠️ - version contains known vulnerabilities or bugs. These are available for archival purposes only and may cause problems in multiplayer or your worlds. Please see the version's notes before installing and know that you will not get support.
* ▪️ - version that is not necessarily vulnerable, but is still experimental and was superseded by a newer Minecraft version. Not advised.
* ▫️ - an extra version that is important in some way, but may not be the latest or stable. Read notes for more info.

### Where can I find the oldest Minecraft versions?

[CurseForge listing](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/fabulously-optimized/files?showAlphaFiles=show) contains all latest versions down to Minecraft 1.16.1. Note that due to technical reasons they may not even directly work anymore, you may have better luck with their MultiMC variants.

If you need to play in a server that uses a version not supported by the modpack, your best bet is installing the latest version of the modpack and adding [ViaFabric](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/viafabric) to your modpack profile [(instructions are here)](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/wiki/blob/main/adding-more-mods.md). It is recommended to keep the mod enabled only while playing the server where you need it.

### Will newer modpack changes get backported to older versions?

Occasionally yes. Cases may include:

* a major breakage
* after introducing a new major stable release
* major updates to most important mods (e.g. Sodium)

This is done to help you while you *transition* to the new version, old Minecraft versions are still unsupported and will not receive full parity.

## Other mod loaders

### Will the modpack move to a different mod loader like NeoForge, Forge or Quilt?

Not planned, and there will not be an alternative variant of the modpack either. May only be considered if something happens to Fabric Loader or its ecosystem as a whole, in which case users will be notified and supported in migration.

### Can I use other mod loader's mods in this modpack?

Only if they have a Fabric variant. [Check this list](https://gist.github.com/TrueCP6/4853f15015b210fd3b1e210e9e485f83) or [ask us on Discord](https://download.fo/discord) if you need an alternative for a specific mod!

# Goals and principles

Since Fabulously Optimized was created, several similar packs have started appearing. So what separates this from the rest?

* **Accessibility** - Fabulously Optimized supports [several launchers](/install-instructions), is [hosted on three sites](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized#downloads), [supports various languages](/language-support). Read more about [accessibility in this modpack](/accessibility).
* **Community** - Fabulously Optimized is developed with the community, [helping you fix problems](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues), [considering your mod suggestions](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues), [hosting public votes for mod inclusion](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/21#issuecomment-998162829) and [even reverting changes if they were not popular](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#131-2020-09-29). The author also contributes to the mods themselves by reporting issues and suggesting fixes.
* **Consistency** - Fabulously Optimized must be sustainable, 100% server-compatible and it should work similarly across versions. Every new mod and change is carefully considered to make sure it would work well, feel vanilla and be available in the future.
* **Familiarity** - main priority is having parity with OptiFine, but sometimes Forge, Bedrock Edition and snapshots are considered as well. Note that the parity does *not* mean identical behavior, existing users of this modpack and Java Edition users' preferences are highly considered in general.
* **Neutrality** - the modpack should only give you the essential tools and fixes to customize your game, not include any opinionated extras itself (e.g. a mod that adds a minimap, armor HUD or more sounds).
* **Privacy** - you shall not be punished for "having too many mods" or "using the wrong zoom mod". In simpler terms, the client tells as little about itself to the servers, mods and Mojang as possible, even though the mods are already allowed by most servers' rules.
* **Transparency** - Fabulously Optimized is [open source](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/LICENSE.md) (including the majority of its mods), documented in this wiki, [changes are outlined](https://download.fo/changelog), [mods are clearly listed](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized#included-mods) with their creator and purpose. Sometimes users are educated [about drastic game changes as well](/chat-reporting-faq#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me).
* **Updates** - Fabulously Optimized [receives fast updates](https://download.fo/changelog) and is one of the first modpacks to upgrade to newer Minecraft versions. That's why its mods should also be consistently supported to not slow down the modpack's development.

### Why use Fabric?

Some facts about Fabric that can make you reconsider using (Neo)Forge...

* **Fabric updates fast** - on the same day as Minecraft itself, and so do many of its mods
* **Fabric loads fast** - roughly the same as vanilla Minecraft, unlike Forge that takes minutes to open
* **Fabric is small** - no huge libraries taking space on your computer, for most mods you only need the [Fabric Loader](https://fabricmc.net/use/) and [Fabric API](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/fabric-api)
* **Fabric is popular** - there are [more than 10000 mods on CurseForge](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/search?page=1\&pageSize=20\&sortBy=relevancy\&class=mc-mods\&gameVersionTypeId=4) and [more than 17000 mods on Modrinth](https://modrinth.com/mods?g=categories:fabric) (most overlap though)
* **Fabric is supported** - many mod developers support both Fabric and NeoForge nowadays, many even moved on to only Fabric now
* **Fabric is compatible** - many mod developers work together to keep their mods compatible with each other
* **Fabric is easy** - many launchers are supported, and the [installers are accessible right from the homepage](https://fabricmc.net/use/installer/)

Looking for alternative mods to those you've been used to in (Neo)Forge? [Check this list out!](https://gist.github.com/TrueCP6/4853f15015b210fd3b1e210e9e485f83#file-forge-to-fabric-ports-md)

### Why is Fabulously Optimized not a client?

* Explicit permission is needed from the mod authors to use their mods in a client
* The authors of each mod would receive no benefits by being included, unless ads or similar are introduced
* Less flexibility in mods that could be included at all
* The client would need to be coded and maintained to keep it up to date

Being a modpack makes it easier for the users to add their own mods in and use Fabulously Optimized as base pack for their own needs. This also makes it easier for the creator to add, remove and swap any mods at any time.

# Accessibility

Fabulously Optimized is designed to be accessible for everyone, and as such contains the following accessibility features on its latest version.

* The first-run accessibility screen is muted due to it making unexpected loud speech to the user.
  * Narrator can be enabled on that screen by pressing `Enter` and on any screen by holding `Ctrl` and pressing `B`.
  * Accessibility screen can be accessed there by pressing `Down arrow` and `Enter` or clicking the ![Accessibility](https://minecraft.wiki/images/AccessibilityButton.png) button in the main menu.
  * Languages screen can be accessed there by pressing `Down arrow`, `Down arrow` and `Enter` or clicking the ![Language](https://minecraft.wiki/images/LanguageButton.png) button in the main menu.
* Users can search for and select [multiple languages](/language-support)
  * User's native language is automatically applied (where supported)
  * Selecting multiple languages is useful for users who know several, and for languages with variants (like Spanish), to ensure mods are translated as much as possible
  * Items have the original names on their tooltips for command usage purposes
* Game controllers are supported
* Local worlds can optionally be played with friends [through the Internet](/disclaimers#privacy-and-security)
* [Several launchers are supported](/install-instructions)
* [The purpose and settings for each included mod are displayed in the mod menu](/changed-options#resource-packs)
* Splash screen is black, similar to Bedrock Edition
* Other [changed options](/changed-options) to match users' expectations
* For more accessibility features, try the mod [Minecraft Access](https://modrinth.com/mod/minecraft-access/)

# Language support

You can translate the mods themselves and the modpack-specific content. All modpack-specific translations are licensed under [CC0](https://www.tldrlegal.com/license/creative-commons-cc0-1-0-universal), meaning they can be freely copied, modified, republished and so on.

## Mods

I support people using Minecraft in their language and would like to promote that in the modpack too. However, this is a *pack of mods*, so if you want to translate the entire pack, you should translate its mods as well.

1. [Check out the list of mods](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/INCLUDED-MODS.md#smooth) and click the name of the mod you want to translate
2. On every page, find the Issues or Source link at the top
3. Read the readme, wiki and/or issues to see if there is already a translation platform. If yes, go there.
4. If not, go to Code tab and browse the folders in order: `src` → `main` → `resources` → `assets` → `(mod's name)` → `lang` → `en_us.json`
5. Open the file and copy its full text
6. Go back to `lang` folder, click Add file → Create new file
7. You'll fork the project and have a new file window open. Name the file in the format `locale_code.json`, such as `et_ee.json`. [In-game locale codes can be found here](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Language#Languages)
8. Paste the text you copied and start translating the values **on the right**, e.g. in the example below you only replace the *Coolmod Options* text:
   * `"coolmod.config.title": "Coolmod Options",`
9. Commit the file and create a pull request. If you're lucky, the mod author accepts it
10. If the language has been accepted, wait for the mod author to update their mod on CurseForge
11. Once the mod has been updated on CurseForge, simply wait for the next Fabulously Optimized update to see it :P

## Modpack

Fabulously Optimized [is translated on Crowdin](https://crowdin.com/project/fabulously-optimized). Here are the steps:

1. Join [the Fabulously Optimized project](https://crowdin.com/project/fabulously-optimized)
2. Start translating the file you prefer. The files are listed in the order of priority.
   * You can vote for existing suggestions with ➕ and ➖ buttons
   * In the comments you can discuss the specific phrase, ask for more info, report wrong translations etc.
   * File-specific tips and requirements [are listed below](#mod-menu-helper)
3. [Join our Discord](https://fabulously-optimized.github.io/discord) for a yellow rank and a possibility to become a proofreader in your language.
   * Yellow rank requirement is translating any file to 100%; it also gives you access to some hidden channels ;)
4. As a proofreader, read over every string, [test MMH in-game](#testing-tutorial) and approve ✔️ everything that looks correct. **Any file must be 100% approved before it gets pushed to FO.**
   * For example, if you fully translate two files but fully approve one, then only the fully approved file will be published at the moment.
5. Wait for the next release of FO to see your translations live!
6. You'll get an email and/or Discord notification when there are new phrases to translate. Then just repeat from step 3!

### Mod Menu Helper

Bundled resource pack "Mod Menu Helper" shortly describes each mod's purpose and available options.

* The phrases have very specific length requirements, so you must test them after translating [with the instructions below](#testing-tutorial).
  * The lines **must be** fully visible in a maximised Full HD (1920×1080) screen using the default font. If your language uses the Unicode font by default, consider that instead.
  * [There is an online tool](https://fabulously-optimized.github.io/Mod-Menu-Helper-Size-Checker/) that helps you assume how long the string might be, but it is not 100% accurate.
  * If you don't have a Full HD display, you can also emulate it in-game: `Options...` → `Video Settings...` → `Fullscreen Resolution: 1920x1080@60 (24 bit)` → `Fullscreen: 🔲` → `Apply` → `Done`
    * If you get any issues, press `Shift` + `P` within the video settings, to get the vanilla video settings and revert fullscreen options there.
    * The numbers after `@` may vary.
* Feel free to rephrase the sentences to make them more understandable and/or shorter for your language. In the options row, list as many options as you can fit.
* Keep paragraph sign (§), tools emoji (⚒️), arrows emoji (🔀) and newlines as they are on the original.
* The length is also important on the tutorial screen. Follow instructions below, close game, set `onboardAccessibility=true` in `options.txt` and start game again.

#### Testing tutorial

1. Select your language on Crowdin
2. Select `Mod Menu Helper`
3. Click `≡` on the left, then `Download`. You'll get a file in the format *language\_code.json*.
   * Is the button grayed out? Make sure you're browsing "Mod Menu Helper", not "all strings".
4. Run Fabulously Optimized
5. Go to `Options...` → `Resource Packs...` → `Open Pack Folder`
6. Open `Mod Menu Helper.zip` → `assets` → `fo` → `lang`
   * On macOS, opening the ZIP will create a new folder, so open that one.
7. Drag the file you downloaded into the archive
8. Go back to the game, `Done` → `Done`
   * On macOS, activate the `Mod Menu Helper` (without .zip) resource pack first.
9. Play any world or server
10. Hold down `F3` and press `T` to reload resource pack contents
11. Press `Esc` → `Mods`. Look around and make sure everything fits.
    * Use maximized window or fullscreen, Full HD (1920×1080) screen, GUI scale 3, default font.
    * It is likely that not all translated mod descriptions are available on the same version of the modpack - just test the ones you can see on the latest stable version.
12. Press `Back` → `Options...` → `Resource Packs...`. Look around and make sure everything fits.
13. If not everything fits yet, change the translation on Crowdin and repeat from step 3.

### Chat Reporting Helper

Bundled resource pack "Chat Reporting Helper" simplifies some vanilla and No Chat Reports phrases to make chat reporting availability and interactions easier to understand.

* In-game testing is needed only for the resource pack description - [use MMH's instructions](#testing-tutorial).
* Some phrases refer to similar vanilla or No Chat Reports' phrases. Read the phrase descriptions for instructions.
* Untranslated languages use the original phrases instead of Chat Reporting Helper's, so your translation helps improve the consistency by a lot!
* For a more complete translation, you might also want to [translate No Chat Reports](https://github.com/Aizistral-Studios/No-Chat-Reports/blob/1.20-Unified/src/main/resources/assets/nochatreports/lang/en_us.json).

### Crash Assistant

Mod Crash Assistant helps users understand how to get support after a crash. Fabulously Optimized includes a subset of changed strings for clearer instructions.

* Length is usually not an issue, so testing is optional.
* It is highly recommended to also [translate the mod itself](https://github.com/KostromDan/Crash-Assistant/blob/1.19-1.20.1/common_config/src/main/resources/crash_assistant_localization/en_us.json), as it contains various crash analysis descriptions.

#### Testing tutorial

1. Select your language on Crowdin
2. Select `Crash Assistant`
6. Go one folder up to `.minecraft`
7. Go to `config` → `crash_assistant` → `crash_assistant_localization_overrides`
8. Go back to the game, hold down `F3` and `C` for 10 seconds
9. Look around and make sure everything looks right.
10. If necessary, change the translation on Crowdin and repeat from step 3.

### Website

The modpack's website is almost entirely localizable to your language.

* Translation testing is not required, but recommended. Currently possible only for proofreaders, read below.
* Keep the format as-is, e.g. if the original says `[Hello world][1]`, then you must only translate "Hello world" while keeping the square brackets as they are.
* The language of the website is determined by the browser, but can be overridden on the menu in top right corner.

#### Testing tutorial

1. Translate and approve to 100% on FO Crowdin's folder "Website"
2. Go to [the website's GitHub and click on "New Crowdin updates" pull request](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-web/pulls?q=is%3Apr+is%3Aopen+New+Crowdin+updates)
   * Can't see it? Ensure your translation is 100% approved and try again later.
3. Scroll down to find a comment by the user `vercel`. Click `Visit Preview` on that comment.
4. Ensure the site is in translated language and click around to see your translation as it would appear live.
5. If needed, adjust your translation and repeat from step 2.

### Installer

It is possible to translate most messages on the installer, except for some very detailed errors.

* The language of the installer is determined by the operating system, but changeable in the top left corner.
* Translation testing is currently not easy and therefore not required, just check the context and ask questions if needed.

### Sodium

Unofficial resource pack that adds translations to Sodium. Managed by the creator of Fabulously Optimized and the creator of Sodium Extra, but is an independent project.

* [Translated on Crowdin](https://crowdin.com/project/sodium-fabric)
* Translations are published every Saturday, so any FO version to come after that will get it.
* Translations do not require approval to be published, however proofreading would still be preferred to ensure quality.
* You are more likely to be accepted as a proofreader if you have previous translation work on this modpack or other Minecraft-related projects.

### Fast Better Grass

Resource pack "Fast Better Grass" imitates the OptiFine's Better Grass' "fast mode". As of FO 8.0.0, this is no longer included by default, but might be re-included in later releases.

* The only string to translate is the pack description. It is translated within [Mod Menu Helper](#mod-menu-helper) to keep the original pack small and simple.

### Untranslated

The listing does not accept translations due to technical limits, users are expected to visit the website for localized content.

The wiki is not accepting translations because there are too many pages to translate and the translations get outdated very fast.

# Improving performance

Fabulously Optimized consists of mods and settings that aim to improve performance for most devices. But sometimes you need more targeted optimizations, this page describes some of those.

## Video settings

* Render distance - affects how far you see and has a high impact on performance. Lowering that is the first thing to try.
* Simulation distance - affects entity (mob) spawning and movement. If you're using big mob farms, you may want to lower this.
* VSync - limits your framerate to your screen's Hz, which may give you a smooth game that uses less system resources, but may also add input lag or increase system strain due to unlimited FPS
  * If available, try using Adaptive VSync before disabling it entirely.
  * [See this article for more info](https://www.howtogeek.com/853225/what-is-vsync-and-should-you-enable-it/)
* Max framerate - similar to VSync, but instead of being automatic, you control the maximum frame rate.
* Weather/leaves - using the "fast" mode may give you a better experience. It is advised to change these separately and keep Graphics on "fancy".
* Particles - FO allows you to either reduce the rate of particles (all/decreased/minimal) or toggle the ones individually.
* Entity distance - unlike simulation distance, this affects just the distance where you *see* the mobs, which means it also works in multiplayer.

Hint: the tooltips of the options usually give you good info on the impact and the effects of each option.

## Adding RAM

Usually, you'd not need to add RAM just to play Minecraft. However, if you want to run intensive shaders or high-resolution resource packs, it may be a good idea.

Try:

* 2GB for light use (if you also lower your video settings)
* 4GB for most users
* 6GB only if you want to play with shaders, high render distance, high-resolution resource pack/shaders, etc.

Click the link for a tutorial that is made for your launcher.

* [CurseForge App](https://serverminer.com/article/how-to-add-more-ram-to-your-curseforge-launcher-overwolf/)
* [Modrinth App](https://www.bisecthosting.com/clients/index.php?rp=/knowledgebase/573/How-to-allocate-more-ram-in-the-Modrinth-launcher.html)

## Dedicated GPU

Own a gaming computer? Follow these instructions to ensure your computer will take full advantage of FO's optimizations.

Before changing any settings, ensure your drivers are up to date:

* [Intel](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/intel-driver-support-assistant.html)
* [NVIDIA](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/geforce-experience/)
* [AMD](https://www.amd.com/support)
* [Snapdragon](https://softwarecenter.qualcomm.com/catalog/item/Windows_Graphics_Driver)

And these instructions tell you how to enable specific optimizations or make the software recognize Minecraft as a game:

* [NVIDIA (GeForce Experience)](https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/add-games-geforce-experience/)
* [NVIDIA (Control Panel)](https://www.nvidia.com/content/Control-Panel-Help/vLatest/en-us/mergedProjects/nv3d/to_configure_uniques_3D_settings_for_my_applications_and_gamess.htm)

* [MSI AfterBurner](https://www.msi.com/support/technical_details/VGA_MSI_Utility_AfterBurner)
* [Snapdragon Control Panel](https://softwarecenter.qualcomm.com/catalog/item/SnapdragonControlPanel) (no instructions yet, this is just the download)
  * Additionally, please download and enable [Microsoft OpenJDK for AArch64](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/java/openjdk/download#openjdk-25) as your launcher may not do it automatically.
  * [OpenCL™, OpenGL®, and Vulkan® Compatibility Pack](https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nqpsl29bfff) can also help.
* On Linux, Intel and AMD GPUs usually do not need additional configuration, but ensure your system is up to date.

Please note that Fabulously Optimized moderators may not have these graphics cards and as such may not be able to help you with this. You can search online or ask in a community such as [Fabric Discord](https://discord.gg/v6v4pMv).

## Additional mods

Mods that may improve performance in specific scenarios, but are not currently in the modpack for various reasons. No guarantees and no support is provided by FO for these mods.

* [C2ME](https://modrinth.com/mod/c2me-fabric) - improve chunk loading by using experimental optimizations
* [Distant Horizons](https://modrinth.com/mod/distanthorizons) - renders long distances with low detail
  * As of Minecraft 26.1.2, you'll either need to disable Iris to run this mod, or:
    1. Add the mod to your instance
    2. Launch the game (Distant Horizons will generate initial config, you'll get a crash)
    3. Go to instance config folder
    4. Open `DistantHorizons.toml` in Notepad or equivalent
    5. Find line `renderingApi = "AUTO"` (approx. on line 550) and set it to `renderingApi = "OPEN_GL"`
    6. Save the file and launch the game
* [voxy](https://modrinth.com/mod/voxy) - renders long distances with low detail

# Server setup

Fabulously Optimized is a strictly client-sided modpack, meaning it works and behaves mostly the same on **every server that allows vanilla clients**.

The CurseForge listing used to have "server packs", but [those were actually just the MultiMC packages](/install-instructions/minecraft-launcher) that were marked as server packs for better visibility.

**Disclaimer: All content on this page should be treated as a suggestion. If you need any help with server setup, please ask in the respective mod or platform support site.**

## Tips

* [Do you even need a server?](#world-sharing)
* [Use speedy server software](#software)
* [Protect users from chat reporting](#chat-reporting)
* [Give users flexibility with client version](#client-version-flexibility)
* [Allow Bedrock users to join](#bedrock-compatibility)
* [Server-side content mods](#server-side-content-mods)
* [Restrict mod behaviours, not names](#mods-in-rules)
* [Prevent cheats and exploits](#exploit-prevention)

### World sharing

Did you know Fabulously Optimized lets you play with anyone in your singleplayer worlds, even if they are on a different network? If that's all you need, then you don't need to create a full-fledged server.

1. Open your world
2. Press Esc -> `Open to Internet`
3. Confirm settings and `Open to Internet`
4. Check the chat for an address (host domain), copy it
5. Send your friend the address. Your friend needs to use the same version of Minecraft, but not necessarily the modpack.

[More info about how it works](/disclaimers#privacy-and-security)

**Note: if you're using an outdated version of the modpack (between 4.x.x - 11.x.x) with this method, it is advised to update e4mc and Fabric API manually.**

### Software

For server software it is recommended to use [Paper](https://papermc.io), [Pufferfish](https://github.com/pufferfish-gg/Pufferfish) or [Purpur](https://github.com/PurpurMC/Purpur/), which are performance-optimized forks of Spigot, but support [all the same plugins](https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/categories/spigot.4/). [Using Realms is not advised](/chat-reporting-faq#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats).

If you still like Fabric a lot, you can [install it on a server as well](https://fabricmc.net/use/?page=server) and use [server-side optimization mods](https://modrinth.com/mods?f=categories!=cursed\&f=categories:optimization\&e=server\&g=categories:fabric), [including those in FO](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/INCLUDED-MODS.md#smooth).

### Chat Reporting

Minecraft 1.19.1 added a feature [that lets users report chat messages to Mojang](/chat-reporting-faq). Most servers disable it, as it can result in users being banned for things that are allowed by server rules.

#### How your server works in Fabulously Optimized

The following icons show the status of the server. Icons are shown on the bottom right corner of the chat box.

* **1.18.2 or below (e.g. ViaVersion)**: FO users will see ![optional](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png).
  * No messages can be reported by anyone. On vanilla clients, gray bars are displayed on the left of the messages.
* **1.19 or up**:
  1. Using [one of the mods/plugins](#how-to-protect-your-users): FO users will see ![disabled](https://i.ibb.co/QDFzXCT/secure.png)
     * No messages can be reported by anyone. On vanilla clients, gray bars are displayed on the left of the messages.
  2. In other cases, FO users will see ![unknown](https://i.ibb.co/Yb1n6fW/unknown.png) until they send the first chat message.
     1. If `enforce-secure-profile` = `true` (default), FO users will see ![enabled](https://i.ibb.co/2YgMHpR/insecure.png).
        * All messages can be reported.
     2. If `enforce-secure-profile` = `false` (recommended), FO users will see ![optional](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png).
        * Vanilla users' messages can be reported and disabled FO users' messages can not. On vanilla clients, gray bars are displayed on the left of FO users' messages.
* **Realms**: FO users will see ![realms](https://i.ibb.co/gTxw84X/realms.png).
  * All messages can be reported and [Mojang monitors all chats](/chat-reporting-faq#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats).

#### How to protect your users

Make sure you follow *all* steps that match your server's configuration, not just one of them.

* **All 1.18- backend servers**: no changes necessary, chat reporting doesn't exist.
* **All 1.19+ backend servers**: set `enforce-secure-profile` to `false` in *server.properties*
  * This doesn't disable chat reporting by itself, but allows users to join without requiring them to sign their messages, to protect their privacy.
  * If no other measures are taken alongside this:
    * FO users will see ![optional](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png) and their messages cannot be reported.
    * Vanilla users will see a warning toast in the top right corner and their messages can be reported. To avoid those problems, use one of the plugins/mods below.
* **Vanilla server**: no known methods exist.
  * You can disable forced signing for clients using "All 1.19+ backend servers" instructions above.
  * For preventing reporting entirely, consider using another server platform, such as Paper, or [alternative chat methods](/chat-reporting-faq#are-there-alternative-ways-to-chat).
* **Velocity**: set `force-key-authentication` to `false` in *velocity.toml*
  * Same comments apply as for "all 1.19+ backend servers" above.
* **BungeeCord**: set `enforce_secure_profile` to `false` in *config.yml*
  * Same comments apply as for "all 1.19+ backend servers" above.
* **Paper/Purpur/Pufferfish/Folia**: install the [FreedomChat](https://modrinth.com/mod/freedomchat) plugin.
  * Ensure `rewrite-chat` and `send-prevents-chat-reports-to-client` are set to `true` inside the FreedomChat's config file to make FO users see a ![disabled](https://i.ibb.co/QDFzXCT/secure.png) icon near chat.
* **Fabric/Forge/NeoForge**: install [No Chat Reports](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/no-chat-reports)
  * FO users will get a ![disabled](https://i.ibb.co/QDFzXCT/secure.png) icon near chat.
* **Quilt**: no known methods exist.
  * You can disable forced signing for clients using "All 1.19+ backend servers" instructions above.
  * For preventing reporting entirely, consider using another mod loader, such as Fabric, or [alternative chat methods](/chat-reporting-faq#are-there-alternative-ways-to-chat).
* **Realms**: impossible to circumvent seamlessly; [Mojang monitors all chats in Realms!](/chat-reporting-faq#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats)
  * [Use alternative methods to chat](/chat-reporting-faq#are-there-alternative-ways-to-chat).
  * Consider [getting a real host](https://www.bisecthosting.com/clients/aff.php?aff=2604) to avoid surveillance altogether (affiliate link - 25% off first month).
* **LAN worlds**: host from Fabulously Optimized or install [No Chat Reports](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/no-chat-reports) on the client
  * FO users will get a ![disabled](https://i.ibb.co/QDFzXCT/secure.png) icon near chat.
* **LAN-like worlds** ([e4mc](https://e4mc.link/) - in FO, [World Host](https://modrinth.com/mod/world-host), [Essential](https://essential.gg/) etc): host from Fabulously Optimized or install [No Chat Reports](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/no-chat-reports) on the client
  * FO users will see ![optional](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png) and their messages cannot be reported.

### Client version flexibility

**Before adding this, it is** [**recommended to disable chat reporting**](#chat-reporting) **to ensure it works properly on 1.19.2 and below.**

Ever wondered, how some servers are able to update the same day a new Minecraft version is released? Chances are, they are using a plugin that enables this without having to change the server version (yet).

**ViaVersion** and **ViaBackwards** are plugins that transform the network packets to let users join your server with a different client version. This is especially welcome for users who mod their client, such as Fabulously Optimized users, as not every mod is updated as soon as the new version of Minecraft is released, so users may be inclined to use outdated clients for a bit longer.

* **ViaVersion** lets users join with a *newer* client version. For example, if your server is still using 1.19.2, this will let users join with 1.19.3 and later.
  * By default, ViaVersion allows users to join from your server's Minecraft version up to the latest stable Minecraft version. This can be filtered in the ViaVersion configuration file.
  * Download for: [Paper/Spigot/Purpur/Velocity](https://hangar.papermc.io/ViaVersion/ViaVersion) | [Fabric/Quilt\*](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/viafabric)
* **ViaBackwards** lets users join with an *older* client version. For example, if your server is using 1.19.4, users can join with 1.19.3 and older.
  * By default, ViaBackwards allows users to join from Minecraft 1.8 up to your server's Minecraft version. This can be filtered in the ViaVersion configuration file.
  * Any new blocks, items and entities will be shown as older types with equivalent properties (like mobs of similar size or blocks of similar breaking speed). Users with newer clients will see them as normal.
  * Download for: [Paper/Spigot/Purpur/Velocity](https://hangar.papermc.io/ViaVersion/ViaBackwards) | [Fabric/Quilt\*](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/viabackwards)

Depending on your server, you can choose to use only ViaVersion or both. If your server is hub-based, it is recommended to install the plugin(s) to each backend server and *not* the proxy itself.

*\* Fabric/Quilt versions can also work in the client, though this is not advised due to potential conflicts with anticheats. It is recommended to keep it on the server only. Quilt support is untested for both server and client.*

### Bedrock compatibility

Interested in allowing Bedrock users to join? Check out [GeyserMC](https://geysermc.org/).

Note that there can be incompatibilities and weird glitches (e.g. with anticheat plugins) because of big differences between Bedrock Edition and Java Edition.

### Server-side content mods

**These mods are usually not compatible with** [**ViaVersion and ViaBackwards**](#server-side-content-mods) **and they require a Fabric server.**

Did you know that it is possible to have content mods (e.g. new blocks and items) on the server without requiring them to be installed on the client? That means that you can add new stuff to the server while your users use unmodified Fabulously Optimized!

* [Check out these mods](https://github.com/Patbox/polymer/blob/dev/1.21/MODS.md) built for [Polymer](https://modrinth.com/mod/polymer) to provide this seamlessly
* [Check out PolyMc](https://theepicblock.github.io/PolyMc/), which can work with even more mods but requires your testing first

### Mods in rules

Some servers tend to put a list of allowed mods into their rules. While it may sound like a good idea in theory, it actually creates more problems due to its vagueness.

> **DON'T:** "Only OptiFine allowed."

This would disallow Fabulously Optimized, despite it having mods that do exactly the same thing.

> **DO**: "Performance and visual-enhancing mods are allowed."

This would allow Fabulously Optimized in your server without requiring further clarification.

***

> **DON'T:** "Only minimap mod X is allowed."

The players would only depend on that single mod's updates, even if there are alternatives available.

> **DO:** "Any minimap mod with player radar disabled."

This allows users to use any minimap mods by configuring them by themselves. Many minimap mods also have server-side enforcement options.

***

> **DON'T:** "Maximum 25 mods can be used."

This would already disqualify Fabulously Optimized, as it has more.

> **DO:** (don't mention it)

Arbitrary mod count limits do not benefit anything at all. Some mods may be big and do a lot, while others may be small and do very little, hence users may have very different mod counts.

***

> **DON'T:** "Only Forge mods are allowed."

Fabulously Optimized does not use Forge.

> **DO:** (don't mention it)

Restricting certain mod loaders or clients is bad for the user and harmful for the Minecraft ecosystem as a whole. Just restrict behaviours.

### Exploit prevention

It is important to keep server platform and mods up to date to prevent client exploits. Additionally you may consider:

* Anti-cheat plugins: [Paper/Spigot](https://www.spigotmc.org/wiki/anti-cheat-list-bukkit-and-spigot-1-19-x/) or [Fabric/Quilt](https://serverside.infra.link/#:~:text=Anticheat/Anti%20X%2Dray)
* Anti-exploit mods [Fabric/Quilt/NeoForge/Forge](https://modrinth.com/mod/crashexploitfixer)

# Unofficial Player Reporting FAQ

This wiki article describes the aspects of player reporting, which is a feature added into Minecraft: Java Edition in 2022. Most of the aspects provide details on *chat* reporting, although later added username and skin reporting are described as well. While the article is from the perspective of [Fabulously Optimized](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized), a lot of answered questions are universal and applicable for every user of the game.

The intent of this article is to educate [good-minded users](#i-already-follow-the-server-rules-am-a-nice-person.-why-should-i-care) about the pitfalls of the newly introduced player reporting system, including important details and answers to questions that [Mojang's official resources](#official-posts) don't provide.

The article, and the modpack do not encourage breaking any rules, and to the author's knowledge (not a lawyer), none of the advice, including described mods, breaks Mojang's [Community Standards](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/community-standards) or [Terms of Service](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/eula) either. The article is provided solely for educational purposes, as-is, without a warranty of any kind.

## Chat reporting

### What is chat reporting?

In [Minecraft 1.19.1](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-java-edition-1-19-1) and up, players can report other players' chat messages to Mojang, which may result in a temporary or permanent ban from all multiplayer servers, on all versions of Minecraft: Java Edition.

Technically, "chat reportability" would be a more accurate phrase than "chat reporting", as no server [except Realms](#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats) reports any chat to Mojang automatically. However, in the Minecraft community the term "chat reporting" was coined and is now better understood.

### How are reports created?

[The official help page](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/7149823936781-Player-Reporting-in-Minecraft-Java-Edition) states the following:

> Reporting can be accessed via the social interactions screen (default keybind is P) or via the pause menu.
>
> \[...]
>
> * A player creates a report, selects the offending chat, name, or skin, a category and details, and submits it.
> * The report is sent to our team of Minecraft Investigators.
> * A moderator reviews the report and the evidence and assigns an appropriate action (if any).
> * If action is taken, a moderator can take one of the following actions:
> * Suspend the player from online play for some duration of time, or in extreme cases permanently
> * Remove the player’s skin and replace it with a default skin.
> * This action applies to any player using the same skin, and future players will not be able to select it.
> * Suspend the player from online play until they change their username.
> * No player will be allowed to use this name once it has been removed.

### Why was it implemented?

[Minecraft: Java Edition Player Reporting FAQ](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/7317376541197) states the following:

> \[...] We need to provide safeguards that will help keep all our players safe and welcome in the online environments where they play Minecraft. Player Reporting will help to keep Minecraft communities free from hate speech, bullying, harassment, sexual solicitation, and personal threats. We believe that human moderation and community guidelines are critical to reducing harmful behavior and promoting healthy Minecraft online communities.

### Why is chat reporting controversial?

Because the current implementation of it is vaguely described, sustainability is not guaranteed and ethics are questionable. [Skin/username reports have different concerns - see here](#skin-and-username-reporting).

* **Banned from all multiplayer** - instead of getting punished on one server, you are getting punished on all, including Realms and others' LAN servers. Maybe you just got angry and swore at someone on one server and want to go to another to relax again? Nope, you can't do that.
* **Some swearing is interpreted too strictly** - some swear words are interpreted as bannable offenses even if the players know each other and know that the other party will not get offended by it. [Read more about one user's experience from this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/xfh3ee/suspended_from_playing_minecraft_for_swearing_in/).
* **Realms chat is constantly monitored** - [according to Our Commitment to Player Safety](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/8047895358605-Our-Commitment-to-Player-Safety#h_01G95X76WR1PM97XBXDE7G25KE), Mojang/Microsoft monitors all Realms chat and will take action regardless of whether you are reported and regardless of whether the other party actually took your message seriously or not. This was not possible before they introduced chat signing and global bans.
* **Realms subscriptions don't get cancelled** - if you get banned, Mojang will not automatically [pause the subscription](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4410000696077-Minecraft-Java-Edition-Realms-Billing-Issues-FAQ#h_01FGCST20673JYZ76PB9BN4BNK) of any Realms servers you own, meaning you'll continue to pay for server(s) you cannot access or control. This makes sense for short-term bans like up to a week, but any longer than that should give an explicit option at least.
* **Not sent to server admins** - sending reports to Mojang will result in different judgement and outcomes of the cases - while server admins could punish faster, with a shorter penalty, with different kinds of punishments like mutes and jails, Mojang can only choose between banning people from multiplayer entirely or not punishing them at all.
* **Report reviewers lack context** - players can select 1-4 messages, to which the system will add up to 9 messages before the selected ones - at most 40 messages in total. That is a very partial context for serious offenses as it is missing player builds, signs, books, Discord/forum messages, daily general behavior etc. In other words, it assumes the player only offends another within one hour, not for a longer period.
* **Fairness doesn't scale** - Minecraft has a huge playerbase and if lots of players play it, lots can report each other as well. How can Mojang guarantee a *fair action* to be taken on *thousands* of reports every day? The investigators may accidentally overlook a part of the conversation or misinterpret the intent due to words used. Compare that to a single server that has fewer players, therefore less reports and less admins needed, appeals that are dealt with faster.
* **Categories don't match server rules** - for example, there can be an adult-only server that may discuss things like world politics, alcohol and drugs freely, but when an underage player stumbles upon it, they can report others for things that are clearly allowed and intended by the server.
* **Categories are vague** - as of 1.20.2, the reason "I want to report them" was added, which implies that "being annoying" is also a possible cause of punishment.
* **Ban reasons and appeals are vague** - [while there is a way to appeal](#is-there-a-way-to-appeal-the-ban), it is not described when and how many times it will be accepted. The fact that *some* bans are temporary is not really the solution - an unjust ban gives a bad impression of the game overall. [This issue has already been prevalent in Bedrock Edition.](https://youtu.be/kEfyaAq90kg?t=108)
* **Reports may not be sufficient** - in the case of most serious offenses (e.g. threatening, abuse, harassment), you should really feel that proper action is taken. With these reports, Mojang does not actually elaborate on [what their "appropriate actions" are](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/7149823936781-Player-Reporting-in-Minecraft-Java-Edition#h_01GD13PG9R60SYNDV88FKFSHRH). They may send a player suicide prevention info for example, but there is no guarantee Mojang will contact the police for you. [Do it yourself!](#what-should-i-do-instead-when-someone-breaks-the-rules)
* **Servers can and do opt out** - most public servers, including Hypixel, have already opted out of the chat reporting system. Obviously the system cannot work if servers opt out. This is another reason for the game to [add clear indication](#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me) about whether a server enabled the system or not, instead of making players assume it is everywhere (or even nowhere).

This is a non-exhaustive list. People have voiced more concerns in various Minecraft communities and the feedback site, search around.

### I already follow the server rules/am a nice person. Why should I care?

That is *exactly* why you should. Previously, all you had to do was to follow the server's rules, so any actions you took were judged by the server administration.

Now, with this system, all your actions are now judged by *two* parties: the server administration and Mojang's interpretation of [Community Standards](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/community-standards).

Even if the server admins know your intent is positive/ethical/legal and have all the context to prove it, Mojang on the other hand has very limited context of what you *say* and what you *meant* by it.

### Can I be banned without anyone reporting me?

On Realms, yes. See [does Mojang monitor my chats](#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats).

On public servers, no. You can be banned by server admins throughout the same server or server network, but multiplayer-wide bans as described here must still be initiated by a player reporting another player's individual messages, [if the system is enabled on the server](#i-am-a-player-how-do-i-know-if-chat-reporting-is-enabled).

### Is there a way to appeal the ban?

Yes, if you [meet their criteria (see "how to submit an appeal...")](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/community-standards#main-content:~:text=HOW%20TO%20SUBMIT%20AN%20APPEAL). It is unknown how many appeals are accepted.

1. [Open the Case Review request](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360003469452)
2. Select "Minecraft: Java" as the game.
3. Fill the form thoroughly with all information you have
4. Submit the form
5. Wait patiently for their response

If you own a Realm, you may want to [pause your subscription](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4410000696077-Minecraft-Java-Edition-Realms-Billing-Issues-FAQ#h_01FGCST20673JYZ76PB9BN4BNK) as well.

### What if I'm permanently banned?

Then you can only play singleplayer, not even LAN-worlds.

### How could Mojang improve the system?

In the best scenario, one of the following:

* Sending the reports to server admins instead of Mojang, as they have the most context to take the appropriate action
* Making the whole system opt-in (or out) as then only the servers that need this help would enable it
* Implementing the system only on Realms or other Mojang-partnering servers
* Not implementing the system at all because there are enough moderation tools built already

If core changes to the system will not be made, Mojang could still improve its communication about the feature in-game and on help pages:

* Make it clear that reports are sent to Mojang instead of server admins
* Add a clear, yet unobtrusive indicator that shows whether the system is in place or not for given server
  * Current vanilla indicators are small and per chat line which are easy to miss or unwillingly ignore; the warning toast is annoying and technically easy to disable.
* Be very clear and truthful about the system in help pages
  * For example, Mojang repeatedly claims that [they do not monitor chat](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/7317376541197) while [that is not actually the case in Realms](#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats).
* Use less cryptic terminology in errors related to the system
* Write a technical overview about the system's working so that users inclined would be able to read it from the official source

That said, credit where credit due: [several technical issues have been fixed since 1.19.3 already](#history-of-changes), which made the experience smoother for users who do not prefer the system.

This is a non-exhaustive list. People have posted more ideas in various Minecraft communities and the feedback site, search around.

### How does this affect Realms?

See [does Mojang monitor my chats](#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats).

### Was player reporting possible at all before 1.19.1?

Yes, [Mojang has had a web form for it](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=4416074743565), that still exists.

But it wasn't really an issue in the same way, because:

* few people knew about it (higher chances of actual reports instead of jokes/bullying)
* chat messages were not verifiable to be sent by the username next to them
* ban system itself did not exist

Therefore, it is unknown, how chat reports in the form were or are handled. Usernames and skins were/are probably handled [as in the newly introduced system](#skin-and-username-reporting).

### History of changes

* **2021 or earlier** Minecraft adds a [player reporting form](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=4416074743565) to its website.
* **1.19**
  * [22w17a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w17a#Gameplay) introduced the concept of signed messages, which is a verification method that ensures each message was sent by that user and not the server. It also added a toggle for servers to prevent entering players who did not sign theirs, though the option was disabled by default.
  * [22w18a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w18a#General) started signing the messages sent by `/say`, `/msg`, `/teammsg`, and `/me`.
  * [22w19a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w19a#General) added an option for players to hide messages by other players who did not sign their messages.
  * Some snapshot also introduced a way to modify chat messages by filtering words, [presumably for Realms](#does-java-edition-have-a-profanity-filter).
* **1.19.1**
  * [22w24a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w24a#General) introduced the chat reporting interface.
  * [1.19.1-pre.1](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Pre-release_1#General) introduced account-wide bans.
  * [1.19.1-rc.1](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Release_Candidate_1) removed the "Extreme violence or gore", "Nudity or pornography", and "Profanity" categories. It was also Mojang's initial "final" plan of how the reporting system would work. Due to major exploits found by the community though, the release of 1.19.1 was postponed by a month.
  * [1.19.1-pre.2](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Pre-release_2#General) introduced red bars and `(!)` indicators on unsigned messages, yellow bars and `(?)` indicators on "modified" messages. It also made the system enabled on new servers by default.
  * [1.19.1-pre.3](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Pre-release_3#General_2) introduced gray indicators for system messages.
  * [1.19.1-pre.4](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Pre-release_4#General) fixed an exploit where players could add new messages to a report that weren't there previously. It also introduced the concept of deleted messages, where the server can remove any message from the client.
  * [1.19.1-rc.2](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1_Release_Candidate_2#General) introduced a warning toast to players entering a server where the server does not restrict the joining of non-signing users. Practically, this toast mostly affected vanilla and vanilla-like servers, as other servers quickly found a way to remove it.
* [**1.19.2**](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.2#Fixes) fixed an exploit where some players could kick everyone else by abusing chat signing features.
* **1.19.3**
  * [22w42a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w42a#Gameplay) did the following:
    * removed red `(!)` indicators on unsigned messages and made the bar gray
    * on modified messages the `(?)` indicator is now gray and the icon is no longer displayed if only the style was changed
    * deleted messages are now displayed for 3 seconds and are replaced by a system message
    * players are now able to join all servers and use most commands (except any message-related commands) even if they don't sign their chat.
  * [22w43a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_22w43a#General) introduced chat report drafts.
* **1.19.4**
  * [23w03a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_23w03a#General_2) made clients attempt to start signing their messages on server join, if it didn't happen on client start.
  * [1.19.4-pre.4](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.4_Pre-release_4#Fixes) fixed a bug where the user could get kicked due to signing requirement after changing their chat settings.
* **2023-08-02** [Minecraft changed its EULA](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-eula-and-commercial-usage-guidelines-updates) and created a new page called [Minecraft Usage Guidelines](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/usage-guidelines). Among other things it states:
  * > Regardless of how you choose to make money to support your server, you may only do so if: \[...] You don’t hide or alter any of the dialogs or prompts that are part of Minecraft (this includes the End User License Agreement (EULA), warning messages, and error messages)"
    * To comply with that, No Chat Reports [no longer allows hiding "messages cannot be verified" toast serverside](https://github.com/Aizistral-Studios/No-Chat-Reports/blob/118eff66e6da2ea5507f568d7ade8741434005b3/docs/CHANGELOG.md#build-1202-v230).
    * As of 2023-09-28, other servers and plugins are likely not aware of the change, as even Hypixel still hides the toast.
* **1.20.2**
  * [23w32a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_23w32a) made clients no longer disconnect when receiving invalid chat messages, instead a placeholder message will be shown in chat.
  * [23w33a](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_23w33a) added [skin and username reporting](#skin-and-username-reporting), removed "impersonation" as a report category and added "generic" report category.
* **2023-11-07** - [Mojang announced the Official Minecraft Server List](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/the-official-minecraft-server-list-live), which features [the "Beacon of Safety badge"](https://findmcserver.com/parents#features) that requires the server to have chat reporting, profanity filter and a manual review by the site's admins. No Java Edition servers have the badge yet.
* [**1.21.5-pre2**](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.21.5_Pre-Release_1#General) - implemented some changes for clientside exploit prevention (against servers sending messages with incorrect timestamps)
* **2025-07-28** - Xbox [announced age verification in the UK](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2025/07/28/xbox-age-verification-uk/) and "more regions in the future". On UK this will take effect from February 2026. Exact behavior on Java Edition remains to be seen.
* **2026-02-15** - Aforementioned age verification starts to take effect for UK users. Affected users [will not be able to](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/1067) use 3rd party launchers, chat or commands.
* [**26.1 Snapshot 7**](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_26.1_Snapshot_7#General) - Users affected by age verification who decide to not verify can open chat, use commands and see system messages again. On servers without chat reporting, they can also see player messages and sometimes even use `/msg`.

## Chat reporting and Fabulously Optimized

### What does this modpack do for me?

Fabulously Optimized includes [(why?)](#why-does-fabulously-optimized-take-a-stance-on-the-matter):

* A mod called [No Chat Reports](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/no-chat-reports) that:
  * adds new consistent chat indicators
  * disables inconsistent vanilla chat indicators and the annoying toast
  * disables chat signing on servers that state they do not want it
  * provides optional features for users who want to configure their experience
* A resource pack called [Chat Reporting Helper](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/chat-reporting-helper) that:
  * makes No Chat Reports icons more neutral
  * improves vanilla and No Chat Reports tooltips to be shorter, clearer and unbiased

In order to get the status of the server, open the chat box (press `T`) and look at the right bottom corner:

* ![police badge with a question mark icon](https://i.ibb.co/Yb1n6fW/unknown.png) - status not yet known, you must send one chat message to get it
* ![grayed out police badge with a line through it icon](https://i.ibb.co/QDFzXCT/secure.png) - no chat messages can be reported to Mojang
* ![outlined police badge icon](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png) - most chat messages can be reported to Mojang, but the server does not prefer it and the playing user opts out
  * In some cases, no messages can be reported but that is not reflected on the icon. You can confirm by seeing if you can report anyone on Social Interactions.
* ![blue police badge with gold star icon](https://i.ibb.co/2YgMHpR/insecure.png) - all chat messages can be reported to Mojang
* ![blue police badge with red recording dot icon](https://i.ibb.co/gTxw84X/realms.png) - only on Realms: all chat messages can be reported to Mojang and [Mojang is passively monitoring the chat for violations](#does-mojang-monitor-my-chats)

*(Expected different icons? Disable Chat Reporting Helper resource pack and* [*see No Chat Reports wiki.*](https://github.com/Aizistral-Studios/No-Chat-Reports/wiki/Configuration-Files#option-showserversafety)*)*

The behaviour can be configured per-server, hover on the icon for more details.

### I don't want to join such servers at all!

If you don't think the ![enabled](https://i.ibb.co/2YgMHpR/insecure.png) icon is enough, you can also be prompted before sending a signed message or block sending all signed messages altogether (on such servers, you can only use commands then).

1. Click Mods
2. Search for "No Chat Reports" and click ![config](https://i.ibb.co/j35cBtn/image.png)
3. Set "Default signing mode" to `Prompt` or `Never`
4. `Save changes`

The behaviour can also be configured per-server, hover on the status icon (bottom right corner of the chatbox) for more details.

### I can't chat in my server!

Some poorly configured servers require chat reportability, but fail to communicate it in a standard way. Then you may see vague messages like "Please relog to chat" or "Please disable mods to chat".

Actually, all you have to do is:

1. Click ![optional](https://i.ibb.co/hstcjW7/neutral.png) 2 times until it says "Signing mode: **Always**"
2. Say something
3. Your message went through and you'll see the ![enabled](https://i.ibb.co/2YgMHpR/insecure.png) icon
4. Optionally: [report the server IP to Fabulously Optimized](https://fabulously-optimized.github.io/discord), so that it can be fixed for everyone

### Is No Chat Reports itself a risk?

No. The mod disables chat signing on servers that explicitly tell the clients "chat reportability is not required here!". In servers that enforce the system, chat signing will work as it does in vanilla.

### I think chat reporting is fair.

Understandable. If you join a server and see a ![enabled](https://i.ibb.co/2YgMHpR/insecure.png) in the bottom right corner of the chat, that server enforces the report system and the modpack will adhere to it, just like vanilla.

In vanilla itself there is no such clear indication as the toast and chat line icons do not accurately work on every server, hence the mod.

### Why does Fabulously Optimized take a stance on the matter?

Fabulously Optimized is not "just a performance pack" or an "OptiFine clone". While these are its core priorities, indeed, the priorities also include [the community itself, privacy and transparency](/principles).

When the system was first visibly introduced in 22w24a, [the players were clearly upset](https://old.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/vcz7ou/this_is_getting_out_of_hand_now_there_are_two/). Not only was there zero prior communication about the system - [except the introduction of chat signing](#history-of-changes), which most users didn't think much of at the time - but also within said snapshot and [the next one](#history-of-changes) (supposedly "the last one before 1.19.1") Mojang did not communicate with the users. Not via Q\&A, no tweets, no help pages. There were practical exploits and ethical concerns which stayed unanswered. [1.19.1-rc.1 removed 3 of the most concerning report categories](#history-of-changes), but still did not communicate with users.

Then they took a step back. Postponed the release by a month to rework the system internally, [made it visually more annoying than before](#history-of-changes) and eventually released 1.19.1. After that, Mojang started working on some help pages to explain the feature in fuller detail. Due to aforementioned concerns and players spreading misinformation, this modpack received a FAQ (which you're reading now) to explain the system as it actually is, while taking a very protective stance in-game. [Step by step](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/376), while discussing with the players and learning more about the feature, Fabulously Optimized changed its stance from "protective" towards "unobtrusive".

After the release of FO 4.2.0 (MC 1.19.2), there were more discussions about the feature, with [users requesting even more neutrality](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/497) from the modpack. By discussing and evaluating the pain points of chat reporting and [Mojang's positive improvements made in 1.19.3](#history-of-changes), a solution was found - [neutral texts and icons](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/issues/499). The resource pack [was released in FO 4.6.0](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#460-2023-03-24) and separately distributed as of [FO 4.9.0](https://github.com/Fabulously-Optimized/fabulously-optimized/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#490-2023-05-02).

As of Minecraft 1.21.5, Mojang has still not fully [fixed the issues](#why-is-it-controversial) or [the communication](#how-could-mojang-improve-the-system). Therefore, Fabulously Optimized cannot fulfill the [principles of being transparent and prioritizing its users](/principles) without also giving them [clear indicators](#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me), honest phrasing and customizable options so that users could make their own decisions about the new feature. It is very important that every user is aware of the system's existence, where and how it works, because it doesn't work everywhere, nor does it align with users' previous expectations of chat in general. At the same time, it is important to reiterate that neither the mod or the resourcepack will actually break any rules or prevent users from reporting if the server prefers it.

If Mojang will improve their communication or overhaul the system again, it is possible that both the mod and resource pack will be removed from the modpack.

## Protection, awareness, alternatives to chat reporting

### What should I do instead when someone breaks the rules?

Do what you always did.

* If a user is being annoying, hide their messages by clicking the chat icon near the username in Social Interactions or, in some servers, `/ignore (username)`.
* If a user has broken the rules of the server, report it to server administration. This is usually done by `/report`, `/helpop`, server forum or Discord.
* If a user is talking about committing suicide, talk to them and [give local help resources](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines).
* If a user is doing or threatening illegal actions, report it to server admins and local police. Provide them with as much context as possible, including screenshots.

### I am a player. How do I know if chat reporting is enabled?

* If you're using Fabulously Optimized or No Chat Reports with Chat Reporting Helper, [click here.](#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me)
* If you're using just No Chat Reports, [click here.](https://github.com/Aizistral-Studios/No-Chat-Reports/wiki/Configuration-Files#option-showserversafety)
* If the server is very popular, you may find it on the [Official Minecraft Server List](https://findmcserver.com/). In there, look for the existence of the light blue [Beacon of Safety badge](https://findmcserver.com/badges-explained).

<details>

<summary>If you're not using No Chat Reports or using vanilla client, click here</summary>

In vanilla (1.20.2), there are also ways to determine whether chat reportability is enabled in a given server, but it requires paying attention to small clues:

* Are you able to join the server with 1.18.2 or older client? If yes, then chat reporting is disabled.
* When you type something in the chat or as a private message, do you see a gray bar on the left? If yes, then chat reporting is disabled.
  * Remember to only look at *chat messages*. System messages always have the gray bar.
* When someone else types something, press `P` ([Social interactions](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Social_interactions)). Can you report that player's chat? If not, that player or server has disabled chat reporting.
* When you joined the server, did you see this toast on top right corner? If yes, chat reporting may be disabled on the server, or players could use a mod like No Chat Reports to disable it for themselves.
  * ![](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/47505981/183680550-d9bc58f3-f93f-4ee6-bd34-d2879bdfb96a.png)

</details>

### I am a server owner. How can I protect my users?

See [server setup](/server-setup#how-to-protect-your-users). If you are a player, you can send that page to your server admins.

### Should I/my server stay on 1.19?

No.

* [The modpack tells you clearly where chat reporting exists and where it doesn't](#what-does-this-modpack-do-for-me)
  * [It is easy for server owners to disable chat reporting](#i-am-a-server-owner.-how-can-i-protect-my-users)
* Most mods are not interested in continuing to support it
* No Chat Reports is limited and outdated on 1.19, so you cannot join all servers
* It is buggy, [1.19.1 fixed several bugs and crashes](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_1.19.1#Fixes)
* If you want to keep using it just for the sake of protest, remember that [1.19 already has the basis for chat reporting - the chat signatures](#history-of-changes).

If you want to stay on an older version, please use the latest version of Fabulously Optimized for 1.18.2.

*This section previously claimed that it may be possible for 1.19.1+ players to report 1.19 ones. This turned out to not be the case because* [*the signing system changed in 1.19.1*](https://youtu.be/DobmW1ZUcbQ?t=681)*.*

### Should I/my server stay on 1.18.2?

Maybe. It is safe from reports, you are free to play it for as long as you like. However, due to the [wide availability of serverside and clientside mods](#i-am-a-server-owner.-how-can-i-protect-my-users), there is no practical reason to *not* update.

### Should I disable online-mode on my server?

No. While that does disable chat reporting, it makes your server vulnerable in a lot of other ways, and is not allowed by [Minecraft Usage Guidelines](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/usage-guidelines).

### Can I break the system/avoid getting reported?

No. It is up to the server to decide whether they want the reporting system or not, use that information to choose the servers you play in. Using exploits to break the system clientside may lead to a ban and is not endorsed here.

### Are there alternative ways to chat?

Yes, usually the simplest option is using any kind of voice chat, for example on Discord. [More alternatives are described here.](https://github.com/Aizistral-Studios/No-Chat-Reports/wiki/To-Encrypt-or-Not-to-Encrypt#alternatives)

### I want to give feedback to Mojang.

Great! Use the [official feedback site](https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us):

## Skin and username reporting

### What is skin and username reporting?

From 1.20.2, it is possible to report players' usernames and skins, besides chat. Therefore, the user can now click the report button on all players' names in Social Interactions, and must choose the category to report for - chat, username or skin.

### Is it bad?

Yes and no.

#### Good

* Skins and usernames are public data that represent you across all servers, launchers, profiles. They affect your (and to an extent, Mojang's) public reputation, so certain limits make sense.
* Usernames were already dealt with proactively, meaning you couldn't choose most of the offensive ones anyway.
* Several servers ban users for offensive usernames and skins, so knowing whether a skin/username is bad beforehand can prevent you from getting banned in the servers.

#### Bad

* It limits user creativity and contextual jokes, if the player wanted to make a joke in one server/context only.
* Words that are offensive in English but not in a different language may still be punished/prevented.
* Multiple strikes on an account may accumulate to a ban from all multiplayer servers.
* In 2025 there have already been [two](https://old.reddit.com/r/Technoblade/comments/1iamhgb/comment/m9h3bsj/) [cases](https://old.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/1juxfi6/so_apparently_this_skin_is_inappropriate/) of unexplained skin bans.

### Are all users' skins/usernames reportable?

On online-mode servers, yes.

On offline-mode servers, it is not certain yet - it may be possible to report but due to technical differences the reports will likely not get acted on.

### What happens when I'm punished?

For the first few offenses, not much.

* If your skin was the offense, it will be reset to default and can already continue to play on multiplayer. You can also change the skin again (to a different one).
* If your username was the offense, you will get unbanned from multiplayer as soon as you change your username.

If you have repeated offenses, you will get a permanent ban from all multiplayer servers.

### Can I appeal a punishment?

Yes, [you can do it with those instructions.](#is-there-a-way-to-appeal-the-ban)

### Can I still use a banned skin/username?

No. Trying to circumvent the ban will likely get you caught again and with several strikes, you'll be banned from multiplayer permanently.

### Can reports/bans be prevented server-side?

Yes. Servers could use nickname or skin changing plugins, which everyone will see but cannot report (as the report will show the original name/skin).

Do your own research if interested.

### Can reports/bans be prevented client-side?

Partially. Clients could use custom cosmetic and title/pronoun mods to avoid using Mojang's servers in the first place.

However, other players *will* need the same mods to see them, and the mods probably have certain rules/reporting features of their own. Do your own research if interested.

## Related questions

### Does Java Edition have a profanity filter?

Yes, but currently only on Realms chat. If you are an adult, you can disable it for yourself [in your minecraft.net profile](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/msaprofile/accountsettings). [Learn more](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/6160517019149)

Profanity by itself is no longer a category one can report other players for. **Swearing at friends, even jokingly, is bannable though** - read the next section for more info.

Bedrock Edition has the filter on chat, signs, item names, books etc. across all servers and content, including singleplayer.

### Does Mojang monitor my chats?

Yes, but only on [Realms](https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/games-apps/game-titles/minecraft-realms-overview) (Java and Bedrock) and [Featured Servers](https://web.archive.org/web/20230610202006/https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4408873961869-Minecraft-Dedicated-and-Featured-Servers-FAQ-) (only Bedrock).

[Our Commitment to Player Safety](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/8047895358605-Our-Commitment-to-Player-Safety#h_01G95X6ZSKYQ6SGC8D6AB7XCNB) says

>
> We use it to classify, filter, and escalate online harms for human review and moderation to promote safe and welcoming interactions on Minecraft games. That includes behaviors such as harassment, abuse, and hate speech.

Similarly, the [why have I been banned FAQ](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4408964729869-Why-Have-I-Been-Banned-from-Minecraft-) says

> Specifically, our highly trained moderation staff is looking at the most egregious violations in public Featured Servers and Realms \[...]

Consider using [alternative chat methods instead.](#are-there-alternative-ways-to-chat).

Though, it is worth pointing out that *monitoring* and "automated proactive chat filtering" in this case likely refers to automatic reports triggered by specific keywords used, not that there is a person or team specifically looking at your messages.

### Does Bedrock Edition also have player reporting?

[Yes, it does.](https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/13019118732429) It is unknown if there is any way to prevent chat reporting there.

### How many servers actually have chat reporting?

**Update:** [**Mojang released an official server list**](https://findmcserver.com/parents#features)**, which indicates chat reporting with a "Beacon of Safety badge". As of Feb 2025, no Java Edition servers have the badge yet.**

There is no easy way to get this statistic, as it is only obtainable once the player has sent the first message, and the server can change its stance at any time.

However, what we do know:

* Any server that allows 1.18.2 or older clients to enter cannot have chat reporting. Yes, that includes Hypixel and many other minigame servers.
* Any server that allows versions between 1.19-1.19.2 and/or 1.19.2-1.19.3 to join *cannot* have chat reporting. This is because these versions have different implementations of chat signing/reporting, and as such they cannot coexist.
* [There are many plugins and ways to disable chat reporting](/server-setup#chat-reporting), and these are popular among server owners.
* Any vanilla server from 1.19 and up enables chat reporting by default, but may or may not allow players to disable it for themselves.
* Cracked servers cannot have chat reporting.
* Realms always has chat reporting.

Public server listings usually only list the latest version a player can join with, not all versions, so even the 1.19.3+ server count is hard to determine.

### How does age verification work in Java Edition?

Affected users who decide to not verify and are using Minecraft 1.16.4-1.21.11 will not be able to see, open or write to chat. This affects only multiplayer and LAN - not Realms or singleplayer.

On 26.1 and higher, it is possible to open chat, use commands and see system messages again. On servers without chat reporting, they can also see player messages and sometimes even use commands like `/msg`.

Additionally, third party launchers may not let you sign in until age is verified.
